NOTE: My sister lives in Mississippi and their area was hard-hit by Hurricane Katrina. She wrote me recently and shared the following: Recovery takes a long time. You talk about preparation and part of that is making sure you have the right insurance. Homeowners insurance doesn't cover flood or earthquakes. FEMA doesn't "give" people money to rebuild. They do give out SBA loans which are low interest but still loans that have to be repaid. People really do need to take care of themselves. After Katrina alot of people found out they weren't covered for floods. It was awful... check your home owners and life insurance.
