25 Must-Have Survival Skills

Perhaps you've noticed.

The world we live in is deteriorating.

Aside from the geophysical part that seems to be going haywire with increased volcanoes, tornadoes, earthquakes, wildfires, weird weather patterns, dead animals and diseases, there are plenty of manmade catastrophes looming on the horizon, too. With more humans on the planet, the greater the competition for resources. More countries seek nuclear devices than ever before, with advancements in technology, this is a much easier process than anytime before. Biological and chemical weapons are also much easier to manufacture because of leaps of technology in regard to computers. Oil markets are much tighter because of the countries of China and India and their increasing need of energy to fuel their booming economies, and new finds of oil fields cannot keep up with the demand. One more thing... the debacle of the world economies needs no introduction.

In short, bad times... REALLY bad times... could and probably will be coming to a neighborhood near you. Unless you and your family take this possibility seriously, if and when something extremely horrible happens, you could very well end up one of the large number of statistics.

That's no joke!

Many survival sites have informative and excellent advice intended to help you make it through a limited amount of time should your everyday life become totally disrupted. However, what exactly does a person do IF the society nearly all of us have become much too dependent on, fails to recover for an extended period of time, if ever again? What IF civilization implodes and only begins to recuperate months, or YEARS, have gone by?

If you watch some of the TV ideas people have on survival being interviewed, you may wonder what exactly these people are thinking. Those who have prepared for major problems are woefully unprepared for any disaster lasting for more than a few days at best. One lady thought having a flashlight meant she was prepare! A man I know has 4 gallons of water. Big deal! Even for those who have invested in years worth of food and supplies, there are some basic survival skills that must be learned and understood in order to increase one’s chance of making it through a possible long-term survival situation.

The following are 25 suggestions of those survival skills that will likely be needed after a nightmare hits human civilization with a vengeance. Each of these 25 skills deserves an entire article to do them justice. ALL of them are worthy of searching on the web, printing and placing in a Disaster Folder. You might even search Google or YouTube for video explanations and demonstrations. Only a brief overlay of each of these is discussed here to avoid long descriptions. Further information can be obtained through many survival books and the many articles on each subject. Situations and personal handling of “Stuff Hits The Fan” (SHTF) situations will differ widely, but the foundation will likely be there for almost everyone. The main objective is to get more people into learning and practicing these survival skills so if/when something cataclysmic does happen, more will be better prepared to deal with and make it through the intense human tragedy.

Here we go...

1. Prepare for the worst. Individuals can still hope for the best, but one characteristic of far too many folks – including so-called “Preppers” - is how they still don't really believe anything disastrous could happen to them. To all my Christian friends who believe God will spare them, Noah and Joseph come to mind as two men for whom preparation was a really great idea! Revelation even says "the Bride has made herself ready" and there are many other Biblical examples, too.

Too many of those who DO ready themselves for disasters cannot find within themselves to approach the subject with their families and friends. Fear of rejection, embrassment, whatever the reason, an actual discussion of the topic could save the lives of those we love so much - if only we would talk about this. Such denial leads to a failure to prepare beyond a couple of weeks at most. To them, there remains the government or some other “safety net” there for them when their preparation runs out.

2. Learn and train your mind to expect the totally unexpected. The bizarre oftens happens, and there are events that are going to freak out even the best- prepared survivalists. Some people will prepare and practice all sorts of drills for various horrors, which is a great habit to get into. There still lurks the possibility of something so strange and weird it ...
