Advice for the New Prepper – by Allen Busiek – USAPrepares.com Instructor
New Prepper Advice
1. Educate Yourself – read some good preparedness related books & peruse pertinent websites. I recommend the following for starters: (Note: the books below are normally available at ABC Books, 2109 N Glenstone, Springfield (www.theabcbookstore.com)
• “Emergency: This Book Will Save Your Life” by Neil Strauss
• “When Technology Fails” by Matt Stein
• “One Second After” by William Forstchen
• “Patriots: Surviving the Coming Collapse” by James Wesley Rawles
• “LDS Preparedness Manual” (free PDF download at: http://www.ldsavow.com/PrepManualGeneral.html)
• “The Survival Podcast” by Jack Spirko (http://www.survivalpodcast.net or www.thesurvivalpodcast.com)
• “Survival Blog” by James Wesley Rawles (http://www.survivalblog.com/)
• www.Solar1234.com by Steven Harris
2. Develop a Threat Matrix
• Make a list of potential threat scenarios that could possibly occur – for your particular situation
• Rank each scenario as to how likely it is to occur
• Rank each scenario as to how severe the consequences could be if it did occur
• Prioritize possible threats based on probability x severity of consequences
3. Develop an Action Plan to mitigate the impact of each possible threat scenario
• Write it out, mull it over frequently, discuss with significant others, collaborators, etc
• Consider resources needed (knowledge, skills, time, $, etc)
• Strive to do things that will “help you to live a better life, if times get tough or even if they don’t” – Spirko
• Revise as needed
4. Implement YOUR plan
• Focus on the highest priority threats first (as identified in your threat matrix)
• Take care of lower priorities when opportunities present themselves
• Maintain “situational awareness” – be aware of what’s going on – local / region / state / nation / world
• Always have a degree of flexibility in your preparedness endeavors
USAPrepares (Vincent Finelli) sponsors a meetup every Friday evening (5:30 – whenever) at Ziggies restaurant (in the Lamplighter motel – NE corner of Glenstone & Sunshine), as well as a radio show on KWTO AM-560 from 3-4pm M-F.
USAPrepares also has a Get Prepared Expo coming up November 3-4 at the Ozark Empire Fairgrounds E-Plex.
These venues might present some opportunities to get together with other area preppers.
See www.usaprepares.com for info.
I attempted to start a preparedness group several years ago, but it never really got off the ground – Yahoo Group: Southwest Missouri Preparedness League (see: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SMPL-/
