Basics of Food Prepping

Emergencies include natural and man-made disasters, including terrorism, industrial accidents and even losing your job can put most people into a dire situation. Our current economic situation has alerted many of us to the possibilities that  we could be headed for extremely hard times. Any of these scenarios can leave you without the ability to provide food for your family. Think about how people flock to fill their carts with supplies and food when a hurricane or snow storm is approaching. Stores hold only about a 3-day supply of groceries and so-called Emergency relief will not come fast enough, if at all. Most local police and fire departments will be overwhelmed and it is highly likely you will have to survive on your own for days, weeks or even months.
The Basics of Food Prepping
In a crisis situation it's very important to take into consideration your calorie and energy needs. Vitamins will help “fill in the gaps” nutritionally. Protein supplements are an option to think about as well.
  •  Plan your food sources to include as much variety as you can.
  •  Eat at least one well-balanced meal each day.
  •  Drink enough fluid to keep your body hydrated and functioning properly (two quarts a day).
  •  Be sure to consume enough calories to enable you to do any necessary labor for survival.
  • Have herbs, spices, iodized salt and condiments to help flavor your foods
When deciding what foods to stock, use common and familiar foods. Think about your possible choices and how you would need to prepare it. Storing foods that are not familiar and very difficult to fix are not as likely to be eaten and could be a pricey mistake. Remember you will want to rotate your food storage to keep things fresh and this means you will need to eat the foods you store even if you never had an emergency.
An excellent option we have chosen and recommend is GoFoods. These  products are specially manufactured to have a shelf life of 25 years and they are organic, certified kosher and preservative free. There's even a Gluten Free selection. Best of all, they taste delicious and are a great healthy choice for your everyday menu and are simple and fast to prepare. Just add hot water! GoFoods offer a variety of choices with more options in the future.  These meals are also a great alternative to use instead of the prepackaged processed food that you find at the grocery store because they don’t have hydrogenated oils or saturated fats.
